DEFENDING CHAMP SETS UP CLASH WITH DUBS PARTNER

Local star Çağla Büyükakçay had a comfortable win over close-friend Maryna Zanevska and sets up with second round encounter with doubles partner Timea Babos from Hungary.

Defending singles champion Çağla Büyükakçay back to her favorite court with a easy win over Ukrainian-born Belgian Maryna Zanevska 6-2, 6-1 and wrote her name to second round. Supported by good crowd in Garanti Koza Arena, Büyükakçay lost only once her serve to clinched first WTA main draw win in 2017.

Çağla will play against doubles partner Hungarian Timea Babos in second round. Babos, ranked 30 in the ranking, who outclassed Swiss qualifier Conny Perrin 6-3, 6-2 in 77 minutes.

Meanwhile, three quarter-finalists defined in singles while two Romanian through to last eight. Sorana Cirstea breezed past Greek dynamo Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-2 to reach her second quarter-final in Istanbul. Other Romanian, third seed Irina-Camelia Begu eliminates 31-year old Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Begu is waiting to winner of all-Turkish second round clash Ayla Aksu-Başak Eraydın for the quarter final.

16-year old wild-card Dayana Yastremska also headlined on wednesday after beating Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-4. Yastremska, who became first 2000-born player to reach a WTA quarter-final, intends on the press conference that she can win the tournament.

Turkish wild-card Ayla Aksu had first WTA main draw victory on wednesday. 20-years old Aksu defeated former Australian Open junior champion Elizaveta Kulichkova in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1. Ayla Aksu match-up with Fed Cup team-mate Başak Eraydın in the second round, that’s ensured at least one local player will be on last eight.
